Resiliency and Innovation: Our Key Takeaways from the 2024 Gartner® Identity & Access Management Summit

By Chris Steinke

Last month, the MightyID resilience team had the opportunity to attend the 2024 Gartner® Identity Access Management Summit in Grapevine, Texas from 9-11 December 2024.

Attending the Gartner IAM Summit was an incredible opportunity to explore the future of identity as described by industry analysts. The event brought together leaders, practitioners, and vendors to tackle some of the most pressing challenges in identity security. For our resiliency team, two key areas stood out during the conference: Resiliency for Cloud Identity Providers (IDPs) and the broader trends shaping the IAM landscape.

Resiliency for Cloud Identity Providers:

The conference’s keynote session, Guidance for Achieving IAM Resilience in a Cloud-First World by Michael Kelley1, focused on Resiliency for Cloud IDPs, a topic, which we believe, is gaining traction as organizations increasingly rely on cloud-native identity solutions like Okta, Entra, and PingOne.

Here are our key takeaways from the keynote and conversations with attendees:

  1. Failover Strategies in Multi-Cloud Environments: This conference, we experienced many attendees expressing interest in failover strategies, and many emphasized the importance of architecting for resiliency by leveraging multiple IDPs. A well-defined failover strategy ensures business continuity even during outages or cyberattacks. MightyID was mentioned as an Example Vendor for the Failover through recovery use case in the Gartner session deck titled Technical Insights: How to Take Access Management to the Next Level by Paul Rabinovich2.
  2. Disaster Recovery Planning: Implementing disaster recovery (DR) solutions requires balancing technical feasibility with operational simplicity. Paul Rabinovich’s session,2 as mentioned above, was particularly interesting to the MightyID team. For us, the key topics of discussion included tools and approaches for seamless DR, including vendor-supported configurations and third-party integrations. In our opinion, our experience at the Gartner IAM Summit reinforced the critical role of identity and access management in enabling secure, resilient, and scalable business operations. As organizations adopt more cloud-first and hybrid environments, a focus on resiliency for Cloud IDPs is no longer optional—it’s essential.

Looking Ahead

As we evaluate our learnings from the conference, our resiliency experts identified some actionable next steps for those seeking to put these insights into action:

  • Conducting resiliency assessments to identify gaps in current failover and disaster recovery capabilities.
  • Exploring multi-cloud strategies to reduce risk and increase flexibility.
  • Leveraging insights and new connections to inform IAM roadmaps and initiatives.

Attending the Gartner Identity & Access Management Summit was an inspiring experience, offering not only cutting-edge insights but also practical guidance to address today’s identity challenges. The journey toward a resilient and secure identity strategy continues, and the knowledge gained from this event will undoubtedly play a crucial role.
